Families & Children
ST JAMES TINY TOTS
This group is for pre-school age children and their parents or carers, and meets during term-term from 1.15pm in Birstall Village Hall on Birstall Road. It involves children’s play, refreshments and a short Bible story or activity. It is led by Mrs Marion Tegg, together with other helpers.
HIGHCLIFFE AFTER-SCHOOL CLUB
This club is for primary school children aged 7-11, and meets on a Wednesday, after School, from 3.15pm-4.15pm in the main Greengate Hall at Highcliffe School. It involves games, activities and a Bible story, and is open to everyone. It is led by a member of the ministry team from St James, with other helpers.
CHILDREN’S HOLIDAY CLUB
This is an ecumenical initiative, between St James’ Church and Birstall Methodist Church, and provides a week’s Christian holiday club for 60 young people, aged 5-10, at Birstall Methodist Church. Each year has a different theme, involving grames, teaching, drama, craft activity and worship.
SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Each term school groups from our local primary schools, Riverside and Highcliffe, come to visit St James’ Church for a programme of educational workshops. These are provided by a trained teacher and the rector, and tie in with the schools’ RE curriculum. The church building is used as a tool for teaching and encounter with the Christian religion.
THE J THING
Following on from the earlier St James’ Youth Group, the ‘J Thing’ is a new ecumenical youth fellowship which began in September 2008, after a period of planning. The age range is 10-14, and it aims to provide a fun environment for building relationships and learning about faith and the Bible. It has a core of young people and is open to all. It is led by clergy and youth leaders from St James and the Methodist Church.
SUNDAY MORNING CHILDREN’S WORK
This is generally focused on the 11am Open House service, involving a range of Biblical teaching and activities, based on the Church lectionary, for children of all ages. It is led by a team of willing volunteers, and uses the new community space at the back of St James’ Church. The same material is also available at the 9.30am service, for any children who attend with their parents.
UNIFORMED ORGANISATIONS
The Church is also closely involved with the running of a range of uniformed organizations in Birstall, including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts etc.
